What We Do
Community and Events
The LSA hosts events throughout the year that bring students together across all three years, including:
Pre-Orientation (Pre-O) - A casual evening before Orientation for incoming 1Ls to meet each other and upper-year students before classes begin
1L Mix and Mingle - A chance for first-year students to connect with each other and members of the legal community early in the year
First Friday Back - Our first social of the year, welcoming everyone back to kick off the fall term
Welcome Back BBQ - A relaxed outdoor BBQ to start the year off with good food and good company
Ice Cream Truck - A sweet break from classes, on us
Medical Malpractice Mixer - A social bringing law and medical students together
HalLawWeek - A week of Halloween festivities, costumes, and fun around the Faculty
Oilers Watch Party - Cheering on the Oilers together as a law school community
Carbolic Smoke Ball - Our annual formal and one of the biggest nights of the law school year!
Mentorship
Our Mentorship Program pairs 1L students with upper-year mentors who can offer advice, perspective, and support. The program runs throughout the year, with gatherings in the fall, winter, and spring to keep mentors and mentees connected.
Mentorship Pairs for the 2026-27 year have been finalized. If you have any questions, please contact lsaext@ualberta.ca.
Clubs and Student Groups
Student clubs are a huge part of life at the Faculty. The LSA supports clubs through recognition, grant funding, tabling opportunities, and a directory where students can find groups that match their interests. Visit our Clubs page to learn more or register your club!
Academic Support
The LSA manages Course Aid Notes (CANs), a collection of student-created study resources reviewed for quality before being shared. We also run PASS sessions, where upper-year students lead review sessions to help students work through course material and prepare for exams.
Beyond these programs, we work with the Faculty to raise academic concerns and advocate for resources that help students succeed.
Wellness
We work alongside the Faculty's wellness resources to support student wellbeing throughout the year. Our Sports and Wellness portfolio runs outdoor programming like El Hacko, our annual golf tournament, and coordinates intramural sports teams for students who want to stay active and compete. We also host events to help students destress and recharge, like puppy yoga, especially during the busiest parts of the year.
Advocacy and Representation
The LSA is the voice of law students. We represent student interests to the Faculty and the University, appoint students to Faculty committees, and run elections for positions like 1L Representatives, the Graduation Committee, and the Student Articling Committee.
Our Partners
Our work is made possible by the generous support of our partners in the legal community, whose contributions help fund events, programs, and student initiatives throughout the year.
